Death is nothing at all.
It does not count.
I have only slipped away into the next room.
Nothing has happened.

 

죽음은 전혀 아무것도 아니다.
그것은 중요하지 않다.
나는 그저 옆방으로 살짝 빠져나갔을 뿐이다.
아무 일도 일어나지 않았다.

  : matter, signify
• slipped away into (살짝 빠져나가다, 조용히 사라지다)
  : sneaked off to, quietly disappeared into

Everything remains exactly as it was.
I am I, and you are you,
and the old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged.
Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.

 

모든 것은 전과 똑같이 유지된다.
나는 나이고, 당신은 당신이다.
그리고 우리가 함께 살았던 소중한 옛 삶은 온전하고, 변함없다.
과거에 우리가 서로에게 어떤 존재였든지, 우리는 여전히 그렇다.

  : affectionately, tenderly

 

Call me by the old familiar name.
Speak of me in the easy way which you always used.
Put no difference into your tone.
Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.

 

옛 익숙한 이름으로 나를 불러줘.
항상 하던 대로 편안하게 나에 대해 이야기해줘.
목소리에 어떤 차이도 두지 마.
슬픔이나 엄숙함을 억지로 과장하거나 꾸며내지 마.

• solemnity (엄숙함, 진지함)
  : gravity, seriousness

Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Let my name be ever the household word that it always was.
Let it be spoken without an effort, without the ghost of a shadow upon it.

 

우리가 함께 즐겼던 작은 농담에 항상 그랬던 것처럼 웃어줘.
놀고, 웃고, 나를 생각하고, 나를 위해 기도해줘.
내 이름이 항상 그랬던 것처럼 집안에서 익숙한 말이 되게 해줘.
그것이 그림자의 유령 없이, 노력 없이 말해지게 해줘.

 

Life means all that it ever meant.
It is the same as it ever was.
There is absolute and unbroken continuity.
What is this death but a negligible accident?

 

인생은 항상 그랬던 모든 의미를 갖는다.
그것은 항상 그랬던 것과 같다.
절대적이고 끊어지지 않는 연속성이 있다.
이 죽음은 무시할 만한 사고에 불과한 것 아닌가?

  : insignificant, trivial

 

Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?
I am but waiting for you, for an interval,
somewhere very near,
just round the corner.

 

내가 눈에 보이지 않는다고 해서 마음에서 잊혀져야 하는 이유가 있을까?
나는 그저 너를 기다리고 있을 뿐이야, 잠시 동안,
아주 가까운 어딘가에서,
바로 모퉁이 뒤에서.

 

All is well.
Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost.
One brief moment and all will be as it was before.
How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again!

 

모든 것이 잘 되고 있다.
아무것도 다치지 않았다. 아무것도 잃지 않았다.
짧은 순간이면 모든 것이 이전처럼 될 것이다.
우리가 다시 만날 때, 우리는 이별의 괴로움을 보고 얼마나 웃게 될까!
